Here is the birth story of Emmett in the words of his mother…
The morning of November 22, 2012, I couldn’t sleep so at 1:14am I phoned Ama and asked her to head over. I still didn’t feel like this was it, but by the time Ama arrived contractions were getting closer. I decided to call the midwife (1:42) to see what they recommended. While on the phone with her the contractions started getting intense that I had to breathe thru them. She decided I better head over to the Birth Centre.
We got Sadie and Nathan out of bed and I called Lisa (my birth photographer) at 1:48am. By 2:00am I was telling everyone to hurry up, contractions were 2-4 mins apart and lasting 30 seconds. It was decided then that Ama would drive me there and Daddy, Sadie and Nathan would meet us there later.
We arrived at the birth centre at 2:30am. I was checked shortly after and was told I that I was 3-4 cm. A little while after Lisa showed up and started taking photos. It was agreed that I would have an IV in case of postpartum bleeding because of the SCH I had from weeks 14 to 20. So at 2:50am, 5 attempts were made to insert an IV, which all failed. Around 3:00am Jon, Sadie and Nathan arrived at the birth centre.
My contractions where now 2-3 mins apart and lasting 30-40 seconds. 4:00am I was walking around, visiting Sadie, Nathan and Pappy in the family room. Sadie and Nathan did a fantastic job rubbing my back and keeping me calm!
4:38am my midwives helped me to get into the tub. The water felt good but hot. Sadie stayed by my side giving me juice, ice, Tums, and a bowl in case I threw up. She was there for anything I needed. She was truly my little helper. I have never been so proud. Nathan rubbed my back but was a little less interested in the whole thing. It was now after 5:00am and I was starting to feel like baby was coming.
This was it, 2 pushes and my midwife passed the baby between my legs where I brought it to the surface of the water. My baby was born in the caul. My midwives removed the bag of waters from the baby’s face. It was then I discovered that the baby was a baby BOY. Then I realized that my husband wasn’t there…….Where the heck is he??? I had let out one yell as I transitioned and then Nathan asked to watch a movie, so Jon took him out of the room and missed the birth! When Sadie realized that Daddy missed it all she announced so happily “can we do it again?” Funny Girl.
Sadie didn’t leave my side; she sat close by while I nursed for the first time. My midwives were wonderful, they were encouraging every moment. It was such a calm fantastic birth experience.
